The river Xstrata wants to mine - part II

Posted by mcarthurriver on February 4, 2007

Here is closer look at the McArthur and some of the issues involved with mining the River.

The NT Government and Xstrata like to refer to it as a river diversion or moving the river, sort of like a temporary detour on the road or moving a chair from one side of the table to another. Apparently, if you say it fast enough and often enough, you can start to believe its possible!

Its more accurate to say they are destroying 5km of the McArthur River and building a channel which they hope will protect their mine. If they were in the military they would call the downstream effects on the river and the loss of culture as ‘colateral damage’. Or would just be more honest they denying the impact?
